Courtney Barnoski sits down with Marching Saints band director Brian Ross Brown to discuss the upcoming season and how its been effected by Covid-19.
How has Covid-19 changed the structure of a traditional band class?
“Since we are trying our best to follow guidelines, we are rehearsing in smaller groups and all outside. At this point, it really isn't possible to have a full band rehearsal indoors. Sometime soon, we will start to rehearse larger segments. I am also adding an online component in the event we need to go virtual, which will be a brief historical survey of the Marching Arts.”
What preventative measures are being taken to protect band members?
“All rehearsals are outdoors, with masks when not playing. I am in the process of trying to procure bell covers for the brass instruments. We are using the social distancing guidelines as well. And of course, no shared equipment and daily sanitizing.”
Have there been studies taken about how Covid-19 relates to band? If so are there any interesting findings from these studies?
“Yes. This summer the College Band Directors National Association in conjunction with several other groups sponsored a study that was conducted at the University of Colorado aimed at looking at the transmission of aerosols as they leave the various instruments. The College-Conservatory of Music at UC conducted a similar study. Both studies shed light on some of the safer ways to rehearse and perform.”
How do you feel about the future of band classes this semester?
“Regardless of the situation, I want to make sure the students can have the best experience possible. So we will make the best of the current situation and hope for better days ahead.”
What can we (student body) expect to look forward to this coming band season? What’s the show?
“We are currently working on music for what we hope will be a spring football season. The music for the show will be classic TV Themes. A few of the tunes are The Original Batman Theme, The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo!”
