The Compassion Pantry Has New Life

Updated: May 30, 2023

The Compassion Pantry was once a highlight of campus, providing food to students who needed it most. Eventually it fell to the wayside as the founders graduated and the students who took it over struggled to meet the demands of running a food pantry. Just a few months ago if you were to walk into the small room at the entrance of the business hallway, you would be met with a space that felt like an afterthought.

Recently the pantry has come under new management that has breathed new life into the space. A group of students from the James Graham Brown Scholars Program have taken over the challenge and are ready to transform the space into a place students enjoy. They started by giving the pantry a new mission statement that embodies the spirit behind the start of the pantry. It reads as follows:

“Thomas More University's student-led compassion pantry is here to support students, faculty, and staff through the contribution of food, hygiene products, common necessities, and a space for all to utilize.”

To truly kick off the new era of the Compassion Pantry there will be a food drive the week of March 13th-17th. It is being asked that the donations are geared towards

microwaveable meals or anything you can make without a kitchen. Items such as mac and cheese cups, canned soup, spaghetti o’s, and ravioli. The pantry is also looking for school supply donations.

Room Management Director David Moore says that the students in charge are excited, commenting that the meetings are electric and full of energy. One thing that we can be certain of is that the Compassion Pantry has new life and it will be one of longevity.
