Thomas More saints serve the community

Updated: May 30, 2023

Thomas More University held its inaugural event on Tuesday, September 14th called Saints Serve, which signified the history of students to serve the local community. The event included students, faculty, and staff that reached out to communities and performed various amounts of acts of service.

Among the many groups that went out to perform acts of service the Thomas More Wrestling team volunteered at the Redwood School and Rehabilitation Center. The wrestlers along with coaches performed landscaping duties around the facility and were provided instructions on where the areas that needed work done were.

“During Tuesday’s Saints Serve Day, I thought the landscaping work we did was very fun and a good experience,” said Tyler Kassinger, a fourth-year grappler. “I haven’t done landscaping before and after doing this service for them, it made me want to go out and do more landscaping for others.”

Another group of students & faculty gathered together to hand-make tie blankets for children with a non-profit called Project Linus. By the end of the day, a total of 55 blankets were made, all thanks to the hardworking hands of TMU's Saints.

The Thomas More cheerleading squad helped to clean up Wasson Way in Cincinnati, OH. Wasson way is a 6-mile pedestrian trail stretching from Hyde Park to Xavier University. We helped to lay mulch around the trees on the walkway and clean up any trash as part of Saints serve day.

"I think it was very educational to go out to the community and work with my team in a new way," said Sarah Wilson, a senior cheerleader.

"Implementing saints serve as a yearly tradition will be really beneficial to not only us as students but to the community as well. It was nice spending the day giving back." - Sarah Wilson

The team helped clear out weeds, trim overgrown bushes, re-mulched beds, and even washed windows around the facility building. After the tasks were complete there were lots of smiles around the facility, especially from the staff and the residents of the center.

After a successful first saints serve event, the university and students look forward to continuing to value, engage and thrive in the community now more than ever.
