Department of Creative Media Merger

Updated: May 30, 2023

Thomas More students who are studying art, communication, music, and theater now have one more thing they have in common, they all are a part of the newly founded Department of Creative Media! The department merger is new this year and will allow students to work closer together than ever before.

The merger will allow students to take classes from one field and have it count for their respective majors. The department merger also will be working towards exactly what is in the name, collaborating creative media. This will be achieved through pre-existing courses provided such as multimedia classes and graphic design courses to newly formed classes such as podcasting and mass media courses aimed at the rapidly evolving landscape of communication.

"Communication programs today encompass such a broad range of topics from podcasting to event planning. I am excited at all the possibilities we now have for the expanded department of Creative Media". Says overall department chair Professor Rebecca Billbo.

“It’s not just about merging departments, it’s about creating something entirely new and different full of creative, collaborative potential for our students, faculty, and the TMU community.” Said Elizaneth Neal, Associate Professor of Studio Arts.

With the new department, it also brings new opportunities for students to take head-on and find ways to creatively achieve their goals. “The modern students being asked to bring in NEW.. ideas.. technique.. approaches in the workplace can rely on just those things from having been at TMU in this new department.” Said director of theatre Gregory Procaccino.

“The Department of Creative Media will establish an interdisciplinary, diverse, and well-equipped collective of students and faculty for years to come."

Carolyn Wagner - Adjunct Professor of Photography and Design

Such a momentous merger is also occurring on Thomas More Universities Centennial and will present the new department with some great projects to work on together. Director of Communication, Stephen Oldfield had this to say. "We're already planning a lot of cool projects together - from a documentary to an exhibit and video celebrating TMU's Centennial."

With more community and more support than ever before, this is looking like a great debut year for the new department. Here's to a bright and creative future with DOCM.
