Starting quarterback Blaine Espinosa ('23) has been watching the games from the sidelines, as he recovers from an injury to his throwing hand that required surgery.
Espinosa broke a bone in his right hand during the first quarter of the Saints’ game against Southeastern on September, 18th. A defensive lineman tried to block a pass during the second drive of the game and slapped the quarterback’s hand, snapping back his pinkie finger.

“When it first happened, I thought it was a normal sports injury,” Espinosa said. “I had so much adrenaline running through me, I wasn’t worried and kept playing for the rest of the game.”
He kept throwing throughout the game, including a touchdown pass. The Saints ended up losing that game 20-14.
Espinosa fractured his fourth metacarpal on his right hand. The doctor recommended surgery as soon as possible. The quarterback received a plate and two screws in his hand on September 24th. Doctors say he could be recovered enough to return to playing in four weeks. Espinosa’s hoping he’ll be ready even sooner.
“I’m just hoping the surgery’s done its job,” he said.
Espinosa is expecting to be back on the field for the Saints' game against Cumberlands University (Tenn) on October 30th at Thomas More.
